Understanding the Common entrance examinations (CAT)
Common entrance exams or CAT computer-based competitive exams which prepare and test the candidates on the parameters such as Quantitative Ability (QA), Verbal Ability (VA) and Reading Comprehension (RC), Data Interpretation (DI) and Logical Reasoning (LR). Prestigious B-schools and some of the best MBA colleges in Ahmedabad accept the CAT exam scores for their admission process. The exams are held each year at an IIM in the country on a mutually agreed upon rotational format. In order to appear for CAT, you must be qualified in the following ways:
Hold a bachelor’s degree with a minimum 50% passing percentage or equal CGPA (45% for Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Persons with Disability (PWD)/Differently Abled (DA) classification)
The bachelor's degree should be from a University recognized by the central or state government or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India
Exam Pattern and Paper Structure
It is important to understand and be updated about the CAT exam pattern because it has been a dynamic structure that changes with updates and notices from the hosting institutes and governing bodies. As per the current structure, the computer-based test comprises of 100 objective type questions across the following the sections:
- Verbal and Reading Comprehension (VARC)
- Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DI & LR)
- Quantitative Ability (QA)
The number of questions in each section may vary each year. It is important that students keep track of the updated guidelines on the official website. The Pattern of the 2018 CAT exams was prescribed by IIM Calcutta, the conducting body of the exam. The Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC) section included 34 Questions and counted for 102 marks. The Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR) section comprised of 32 questions and valued at 96 marks. The Quantitative Ability (QA) section had 34 questions and weighed 102 marks making a total exam of 100 questions weighing 300 marks. Each section is time-bound with 60 hours per section which cannot be interchanged with other sections. Students must also be prepared for negative marking (-1) for each wrong question. Since 2015, the questions also include Non-MCQs which can be answered using a virtual keyboard.
